Mortal Engines, the next blockbuster by The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, released its first official trailer today. The movie takes place supposedly thousands of years after a cataclysmic event crippled humanity. From the trailer, and the teaser we saw a couple months ago, we see that cities, particularly London, have been put on wheels and run on engines that eat smaller wheeled communities to steal their resources. Imagine Mad Max but if New York City was all of a sudden able to move.
Will we see London face off against another major world city, maybe Paris for old times sake? I certainly hope so because that’s the selling point of the movie for me. From the trailer we can deduce that Hera Hilmer’s character is out to avenge her mother’s death by killing her murderer, Valentine. Valentine is played by Hugo Weaving, and if The Matrix and Captain America have taught us anything, it’s that Hugo Weaving can play a damn good villain.
This trailer put just enough in it to pique my interest but not enough to give too much away (as trailers should). Mortal Engines comes out in theaters December 14th, so be sure to check back for more updates in the coming months.
